Used for a long time without creating an account, what next?

I bought Pocket Casts a few years ago and never set up an account, though I use and love the heck out of it. Now I’m looking at getting a new phone and I’d like to save data to make the changeover easier. If I create an account, will it save everything that I’ve done so far? How much of that will port over to a new phone?

Great question! Setting up an account is definitely the way to go to make your transition to a new phone much smoother.
Yes, if you create a Pocket Casts account, it will save certain information in the cloud, allowing you to sync it across devices and restore it on your new phone. Specifically, your podcast subscriptions and playback progress (where you left off in each episode) will be synced.
However, the syncing is not instantaneous. The app automatically requests a refresh roughly once an hour, or whenever you open the app. Keep in mind that your phone’s operating system (iOS or Android) can sometimes delay this request and perform the refresh at a time it deems appropriate.
To ensure your data is backed up before you switch phones, you can manually force a sync by tapping “Refresh now” in the app’s Profile tab. We recommend doing this shortly before you start setting up your new phone to have the most up-to-date information transferred.
