Why does PocketCasts take up so much space on my phone?
-
I never want to give up my iPhone 12 Mini—Apple has stopped making small, light phones—but I’m always approaching the 64 GB storage limit.
PocketCasts is a light app (only 82.4 MB) but my Documents & Data are taking up 1.26 GB.
I don’t have any downloaded episodes. I have 1.5 GB of files in the cloud, but none are downloaded. I even deleted over 2 GB of cloud files (again, none downloaded) I didn’t need anymore; that made no difference.
What is taking up all this space? Is it my listening history file? I’ve been a user for 6 years and my total listening time is just under 700 days.

It’s your cache, and frustratingly the app doesn’t give you any way to delete it (as lots of music streaming apps do, for example). Only workaround I found was deleting the app and re-installing.

I offloaded and re-installed, which did shave off a few hundred MBs. Thanks for the tip!

Hi @staff-eleanor, Just wondering: very grateful for the app but is there a reason Pocket Casts can’t give the option of clearing one’s cache? On Qobuz, for example, a music streaming service I use, you can control the size of your cache, delete music stored in it entirely, etc. It seems like the cache storage issue is a problem for a lot of folks, maybe especially heavy users? Thanks for any thoughts.

@didactique That does seem like an elegant solution. I’ll forward that along to our developers as a feature request. I can’t offer an estimated timeframe or confirm that it will be implemented, but hopefully they will consider it soon!

I tell anyone who’ll listen that PocketCasts is the only app to use if you’re into podcasts. This forum is one reason why! Imagine trying to get your voice heard by anyone at Apple or Spotify.

Very true @bugsmeany! And thanks for looking into it @mikerockwell! Honestly, just the option to delete one’s cache in one go would be great. Controlling the size is likely an unnecessary complication. Cheers.

I have the same problem as the original poster, except that Pocket Casts’ “Documents and Data” is occupying 6.65GB on my iPhone (also 12 mini, co-incidentally!)
If I delete the app and reinstall it, will it remember all my subscriptions and which episodes I have listened to, archived etc.? It would be tedious to manually catch everything up.

@enthusiasticallyiron1744b42747 Your listening history, archive activity and subscription are synced to the cloud, as long as you are logged in with a Pocket Casts account on the app.
You can verify this by logging in to https://play.pocketcasts.com/ on the web.

Thanks: I deleted and reinstalled and nearly all of the 6+ GB that was being used is now freed up. Good stuff.
