Automatically download episodes but only up to a certain number of hours
-
One of the reasons why we automatically download episodes added to Up Next is so that we don’t use data when driving or commuting. But we don’t need to download all of them.
I’d love if we were able to configure “download everything I add to Up Next until the running time equals or exceeds five hours”, that way I would have enough episodes lined up to last until I get to wherever I’m going and when I would get WiFi again, the downloads would top up without needlessly occupying storage.
I can’t be the only one who adds whole seasons to Up Next at once. :)

Thanks for your feedback on this! I’ve forwarded this along to our development team so they can take it into consideration when looking at possible new features.

This is my most-wanted feature!
I listen to a lot of podcasts and I am perpetually “behind”. For nearly all of them, I play them in oldest-first order and don’t want to skip any through an automatic mechanism such as “keep only the three most recent”. (I skip plenty MANUALLY if the episode topic is of low interest to me, but the app can’t decide that for me.) I also listen mostly while driving, which means I am not on wifi and need to download episodes ahead of time.
Right now the only way I’ve figured to manage this is simply downloading new episodes as they are released, which means I’ve dedicated a huge amount of storage on my phone dedicated to weeks worth of releases. (30+ hours of listening time on there right now.)
If Pocket Casts could intelligently make sure–when on wifi–that the next “X” hours of my Up Next queue are downloaded (if not already on the device), that would make a huge a difference for me: I could turn off the autodownload of new episodes in the feeds and free up lot of storage space.

Great use case, and it really does build on the original request nicely. This idea has been added to our ideas board for the team to consider. The more community interest it gets, the better its chances of making it into the app.
