Background/Theme Color in “Up Next”

I’m switching over from Castro, and I think I can make this work if I set up the filters correctly in the New Releases section, but one thing might be a deal breaker –

I can’t find any way to change the background in the “Up Next” list/player so it’s not just dark/black. I’ve adjusted all the appearance in the settings so that “use iOS light/dark mode” is off and the theme is “default light” and I’m not seeing any other options, but the background for the queue is still black.

Am I missing something? Except for a few brief checks of my new releases/inbox each day, 99% of my podcast listening is from this screen and I have a lot of trouble reading against the black background.

  • We don’t have any plans for supporting this at the moment. However, I have added your suggestion to our feature requests.

Thanks for contacting us with a well-written and thoughtful suggestion.

    Hello, first post! :)

I thought I would add to this as feedback that the player interface itself (now playing, details, bookmarks) seems to be the only place in the app that doesn’t switch between light and dark theme. It’s always dark. Is this intentional? I think it would be good to have this with light and sync with os as options too.

  • Welcome, @rea1human! That’s a great request! That is not a feature that we currently offer, but I have added your suggestion to our feature requests. We appreciate your feedback.

    @staff-frank

I came to write the same as @rea1human. I also use the light theme whereupon Now Playing, Details and Bookmarks tabs still appear dark. This is an oversight, nothing more. The last exchange on this was 2 years ago (2024), and to this day, this oversight remains. Why?

  • @owlbagelariel53883 if you navigate to Profile > Settings > Appearance, you can disable the “Use Dark Up Next Theme” option. When this is disabled, the Up Next view should match your currently selected theme.

    Thanks @mikerockwell.

Perhaps I didn’t explain myself well. I’m referring to these screens/tabs in particular:

    (1) Now Playing

    (2) Details

    (3) Bookmarks

So, when a Light theme is selected in Profile > Settings > Appearance, the rest of the app switches to light mode, except the screens/tabs I’ve listed above. This is the oversight we are referring to.

(For what it’s worth, the toggle to use a dark theme for Up Next is already disabled. It has no bearing on those screens anyway.)

I look forward to hearing from you/Pocket Cast on this.

    Thanks.

  • @owlbagelariel53883 ah, my apologies for the misunderstanding, I thought you were referring to a different screen in the app.

Thank you for the clarification. I’ll forward this feedback along to our team to consider for future development.
