Constant crashing issues have returned in older Androids.

Hi there, @uup115
Thanks for flagging this. We have narrowed down the cause, as we re-enabled a feature in 8.16 which caused the problem to come back. We have a fix being tested that should resolve it.
Just to make sure our analysis is correct, are you using an older Huawei device, or a device with a Kirin chip? So far, those were the only devices we noticed the issue on.

Hi @uup115
We have a fix for it under review: https://github.com/Automattic/pocket-casts-android/pull/5677
In the meantime, you could also consider sideloading Pocket Casts v8.15 until the fix is out and make sure not to update until the fix is released https://github.com/Automattic/pocket-casts-android/releases/download/8.15/app-8.15.apk

is there an update with this issue? The new update improved the crashing but the playback is very spotty and stuttering.

Thanks for the update, glad to hear the crashing has improved. The stuttering and spotty playback you’re describing sounds like it could be related to how the fix changed playback behavior on older chipsets like your MT6737, though it’s also possible it’s a separate issue.
To help us dig into this properly, could you confirm:
- Which app version you’re currently running (please make sure you’re on the latest, 8.17, if not already)
- Whether the stuttering happens with both streamed and downloaded episodes
- Whether it happens consistently or only with certain podcasts/episodes
Since this may need a closer look at logs specific to your device and version, it would help if you could reach out through the app directly rather than continuing here, that way logs get attached automatically and we can dig into the specifics privately:
Profile → Help & Feedback → Get in touch → Get Support
Mention this thread and the stuttering/spotty playback issue when you do, so it gets matched up with the right context. We’ll keep working on getting this fully sorted for your device.
