Finished downloads not auto-deleting when finished, not able to do it myself

As you can see theres a big discrepancy between the size it’s taking on my phone and what the app says is downloaded. This is not the first time this has happened and I couldn’t find anyone else describing this. Anyone know how to fix this without deleting the all completely and reinstalling it? The files really add up

wanted to add that auto-archive is also set up to “after playing” but this still isn’t working

  • Thanks for the screenshots! It looks like you’re on an Android device. Is that right?

The figure in your device’s system settings includes cached/temporary files that Android keeps independently of Pocket Casts. Pocket Casts only reports the actual downloaded episode files it manages, so some gap between the two numbers is expected. See Storage Management for more detail.

To manually clean up downloads in Pocket Casts

    1. Go to Profile > Downloads
    2. Tap the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner
    3. Tap “Clean Up”
    4. Select the episode statuses you want to remove (e.g., played, archived)
    5. Tap “Clean Up” then confirm with “Delete”

To clear the app cache on Android

    1. Open your device’s Settings
    2. Tap Apps (or App Manager, depending on your device)
    3. Find and tap Pocket Casts
    4. Tap Storage
    5. Tap Clear Cache

Clearing the cache won’t affect your account, subscriptions, or playback progress. More info: Managing and Troubleshooting Episode Downloads

If the storage figure still seems much higher than expected after both steps, reach out via the app so we can look at your app logs: Profile > Help & Feedback > Get in touch > Get Support.

Hi Eleanor, I had already tried both of those steps and it didn’t make any impact. Do you have any other suggestions or ways to avoid this in the future? If I’m forced to delete the app to clear the episodes I’m probably going to switch podcast apps because I don’t want to keep doing this to keep my storage from being filled up lile this

  • Hi there!

That is certainly frustrating, @sbrock93, I understand what you mean.

Could you please send through your logs to us via Profile > Help & Support, as per https://support.pocketcasts.com/knowledge-base/collecting-app-logs/

We’ll take a deeper dive to see if anything stands out in the logs, or if it is out of our control (which often is the case when the OS is not reporting the amounts properly)
