I want to totally stop when I close the app.
right now a miniplayer continues to play my podcast

Could you let us know what platform you’re using Pocket Casts on where you see this behavior? That will help with our testing and suggestions on next steps.

A Samsung S23.
Anything else I should provide ?
I looked for some setting for this but didn’t see anything

Hi there, @bp20110601! Could you tell me more about the ideal behavior of the app when it’s closed? And, which steps you’re taking to close the app?
Usually, before you leave the app, you can tap Pause in the mini player or Now Playing screen. Then, if needed, fully close the app, or leave it paused in the background.
If your ideal behavior is “whenever I swipe Pocket Casts away from Recents, audio should automatically stop,” can you tell me whether you’re closing the app from the Recents screen, the Home button, or by swiping away the notification?
If you’re asking about why a new podcast will start automatically when an episode is over, then you can check your Autoplay settings at Profile → Settings (gear) → General.
Once we have more details we can look into this a bit more. -
eleanor;
I have a couple use cases.
I mostly use this connected to my car. In that case things work OK because I pause it via the steering wheel control so I guess it just stays paused. Note I pretty much always close all apps and shut down my phone over night.
The issue is when just using my phone stand alone or just bluetooth connected to a speaker. In that case I tap the ‘recents’ (||| on lower left) icon and swipe it or close all. That is where it happens. I just did it. Started a pod cast, tapped the ‘recents’, scolled to the app, swiped up to close it. The mini player is still going. I then brought up recents and tapped ‘close all’. It is still running. I expected that killing the app would stop playing. That would be my ideal result. I guess maybe others would want it to continue. Perhaps an option for that makes sense?

Thank you for sharing those details with us!
It doesn’t sound like this is expected behavior, but I’ve reached out to our development team for clarification on this. We’ll be sure to follow-up here once we have more information to share.

@bp20110601 I’m just following up on this issue as I recently heard back from our development team. The audio playback is a separate running service on Android, which is why closing the app in this way does not also stop playback.
However, you can open the app’s info — typically accessible by long pressing on the app’s icon from your device’s app launcher. You’ll find a “Force stop” option listed there, which will close the app and stop playback.

thx
I knew I could do that but was hoping for a better answer
is there a way to just disable the mini player and only play through the app?

There isn’t a way to disable this behavior at the moment, but I’ve submitted a feature request for this to our development team. I can’t confirm it will be implemented or offer an estimated timeframe, but our team regularly reviews feature requests for possible future development.
