How to re-download Downloaded episodes to new iPhone?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have 233 episodes downloaded on my previous iPhone. I just upgraded to a new phone. Pocketcasts works fine on the new phone, but only 97 downloaded espisodes are showing up. How do I force Pocketcasts to re-download all the previously downloaded episodes?
(I know some people posted about this a few years ago, but seems the developers never bothered to fix this issue.)
    Thank you…

Unfortunately, episode downloads don’t transfer between devices and aren’t included in Pocket Casts sync. Each device needs to download episodes independently, so there’s no way to push all 233 downloads from your old phone to the new one in one go. The 97 episodes you’re seeing are likely ones that are still in your episode lists and available to re-download from the podcast servers.

For episodes that aren’t showing up, check whether the podcasts they belong to are still in your library on the new phone. If they are, you can browse each podcast’s episode list and download the ones you want. If a podcast’s older episodes aren’t visible, the feed may only carry a limited back-catalogue.

More detail on how downloads work across devices is in the Managing and Troubleshooting Episode Downloads article, under “Syncing Downloads Across Devices” and “Transferring Downloads to a New Phone.”

This is a basic feature it should be there

  • Unfortunately, episode downloads aren’t part of Pocket Casts sync, so each phone keeps its own downloads, and a new phone needs to download them again. There isn’t currently a way to transfer downloads from an old phone.

That said, you can re-download in bulk rather than one episode at a time according to the following:

    1. Open a podcast’s page or a playlist that shows the episodes you want, such as In Progress or a Smart Playlist set to show unplayed episodes.
    2. Tap the three-dot menu and choose “Download All”.

Download All covers up to 100 episodes at a time, so for a long list it can help to split it across a few podcasts or playlists. You can also long-tap an episode to enter multi-select mode, tap Select all, then tap Download. Episodes that are no longer in a podcast’s feed can’t be downloaded again, however.
