Playback skips backwards randomly
-
@nwhdkk6b7t Our developers have been working on a new method for playback of streamed episodes that should help with this. I don’t have an exact timeline for a release, but hopefully it will be ready soon.
You seem to also be the only podcast app that doesn’t have the option to rate and review podcasts. Why?
We recently introduced a star rating, which can be seen alongside the podcast’s description in the Podcasts and Discover tabs. This is currently an aggregate of publicly available ratings, but in the future that will likely change to also include the ability to rate podcasts within Pocket Casts as well.

@mikerockwell thank you for the response. It is appreciated. Sorry for the tone in my post. It was a bit over the line. I’ve just grown really frustrated with the skipping issue, but that wasn’t an excuse for being a jerk. Glad it’s getting addressed

@nwhdkk6b7t, no worries at all. I know that this issue has been an annoyance for some users and it’s been a tricky one to troubleshoot and resolve on our end. But I can assure you that this something our developers have been prioritizing. :)

Thank you for letting us know @jeni310kriebel. Our development team is working to resolve this issue.

just another data point, this happens to me too on android on various different podcasts I listen to – the latest happened on Missed Apex podcast “Dutch F1 GP review 2024” somewhere between 11 minutes and 13 minutes in, it skipped backwards by a couple of minutes. Agree with other posters that this isn’t a minor issue and hope it gets resolved soon

This is happening daily for me on ios / streaming. Above is specific podcast episode example. It’s not actually jumping back / forward in the progress bar – it’s as if the audio has been downloaded incorrectly. i.e. if you rewind to where the glitch was, you’ll hear it again. In this case, about 6 minutes before the end of the episode, in the middle of speaking, the outro music randomly played for maybe 2 minutes, then the speaking returned. So it seems like audio chunks are being downloaded out of order or something.
I was going to contact the podcast producer to tell them they had sloppy editing, then listened in Apple Podcasts just to make sure and sure enough there was no issue.

@iloveparis – thank you very much for sharing all of that information with us!
@jamesnewcastle – thanks for sharing that with us, too!
I can confirm that both of these cases have been relayed to our developers. They will investigate and work on a solution for this.

This issue is still happening to me on a regular basis on all podcasts. I’m on iOS and have the most recent update downloaded.
If the only way to solve this is to download every podcast episode then that is a real pain!

After trying a few other podcast apps, I have come to the realization that others “hide” this issue by downloading without even asking. Similar behavior can be achieved by going to “Settings > General > Row Action > “Download”.
Now in the episode selection, instead of a play button you’ll get a download button and you have to wait before tapping play. It doesn’t work in Android Auto UI. So you’ll need to remember to download before driving but it’s the best compromise I could find.

Hi y’all! Thanks for your continued feedback regarding the playback skipping issue. We’d like to inform you that a workaround suggested by another user seems to be working for them.
Their solution is to begin downloading the podcast episode and start playing it as soon as it’s reached around 3-4% of the download progress. This approach seems to help prevent the skipping issue.
Please try this method in the meantime.
We’re also actively investigating this issue and working on potential solutions.

Hello everyone,
We are deploying a new fix on version 7.76, if you have access to the beta builds on TestFlight I would love for you folks to test it and see if the issues is still present.
If you want to be added to Testflight for accessing beta builds please contact support in the app.
Thanks for you patience with this issue.

I find the issue is much worse with IHeart podcasts than others, but that might be because they also inject more ads than any other podcast hosting platform I’ve come across. I’ve seen other listeners complain about this issue online in social media as well, some also noticing the same issue with IHeart podcasts as I was having.
Now it may be because I haven’t been listening to many IHeart podcasts lately, but until yesterday, I hadn’t encountered the issue for many weeks, and had forgotten about it. I think a lot of the issue stems from what is actually released from the podcast platforms, rather than the podcast players, as this issue was really bad when I was using Google Podcasts, as well as Spotify (although I haven’t used Spotify for a few years now, so I can’t vouch whether it is still an issue on that platform).
I’ve just opted in for beta testing, so we will see how it goes.

But is not possible to download completely the episode before play it? If you can press play (and not download) and the episode start to play only after was downloaded completely? Could be a solution? With Android Audio e CarPlay you can only play episode and this issue happen always…

hi, just adding to the bug reports.
exactly the same issue:
- iPhone 15
- iOS 17.6.1
- app version 7.76.1
- example podcast : no such thing as a fish (which does have dynamic ads)
very much still a problem. Skips can be several minutes.
