PocketCasts stopped updating private feed for 3 months

I have a private feed self-hosted, and have a public facing URL exposed via Cloudflare. I have been using this for at least a year with no issues, but I noticed back in January it stopped updating. Adding the same feed to other apps works (I.e., Apple Podcasts) and does show new episodes, but even after repeatedly forcing a refresh in PocketCasts, it detects “No episodes”.

I assume this has something to do with how PocketCasts acts as a “man in the middle” for the feed; is there a way to bypass this and just have the podcast be local? Or is there any way to force an update to figure out why it might be getting blocked?

I’m not able (willing?) to post the URL here, but my account for PocketCasts is the same email as the forums, if that helps.

  • Hi there! I checked your account and I believe I found the podcast you’re having trouble with. In this case, the RSS feed URL is showing a 404 indicating that the podcast is not available. We recommend you reach out to the podcast host so they can provide a new URL. You can learn more about how Pocket Casts manages private podcasts in this guide.
If you still need more help with this one, do let us know. You can reach out via the app. Go to Profile > Help & feedback > Contact Support > Get Support.

Thank you for the prompt response (and apologies for not responding sooner, had a family visit).

It does look like the subdomain is available, and it is accessible externally via Cloudflare. See the attached screenshot (accessed via my phone on mobile internet which won’t hit my local DNS):

  • Hi there, @redmumba!

I was able to locate the feed in question and confirmed that the feed fails to parse due to a 403 error.

You would need to ensure our parsers are not being blocked: https://support.pocketcasts.com/knowledge-base/about-pocket-casts-feed-parser/

I assume this is due to geoblocking; where do requests come from for PocketCasts?

  • Unknown's avatar

Looking at the IPs listed, these all originate in the US (AWS it looks like) — can you provide more information about what the error is? If this is Cloudflare blocking it, there should be a rendered page.

  • Hi there, @redmumba

    We’re getting a 403 Forbidden error.

For Pocket Casts to reliably parse RSS Feeds, you’ll need to whitelist our parsers.
